Back Pain Q & A

Why do I have back pain?

Back pain often occurs when you pull a muscle during daily activities, whether lifting something heavy, increasing your exercise routine, or beginning a new sport. Overuse injuries are one of the most common causes of back pain, but a traumatic injury, like a fall or car accident, can also cause spine problems.

As you get older, the spine develops degenerative diseases that cause chronic back pain, such as:

  • Herniated discs
  • Facet joint arthritis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Bone spurs
  • Vertebral compression fractures
  • Slipped vertebrae (spondylolisthesis)

Any type of spine problem can pinch the spinal nerves, often adding symptoms beyond your pain.

What symptoms accompany my back pain?

Back pain affects each person differently. Your pain could come and go or be a constant problem. Some people have dull, aching pain, while others have sharp, severe pain.

Pinched nerves typically cause symptoms that travel along the nerve. As a result, you may have pain, tingling, or a burning sensation that goes down your legs. Sciatica, one of the most common causes of lower back and leg pain, sends sudden, electric-shock pain shooting down one leg.

Severe nerve damage can also block sensation in your leg. In addition to numbness, damaged nerves may cause muscle weakness in the affected leg.

What treatments relieve my back pain?

The Revive Spine and Pain Center team learns about your medical history, evaluates your back, and may take diagnostic imaging to determine the underlying cause of your pain. Your provider recommends a treatment plan based on your unique needs, considering variables like your diagnosis, the severity of your pain, and how long your pain has lasted.

If you haven’t already received conservative treatment, your provider begins your treatment with anti-inflammatory medications, activity modification, physical therapy, and/or chiropractic care.

When back pain persists despite these measures, your provider creates a pain-relief plan using specialized treatments, such as:

  • Nerve root blocks
  • Medial branch block
  • Trigger point injections
  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Spinal cord stimulation
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Sacroiliac joint stabilization
  • Minimally invasive lumbar decompression

Each treatment in this list effectively relieves your back pain using different techniques. For example, some relax muscles, reduce nerve inflammation, or take pressure off the nerve, while others prevent nerves from sending pain messages to your brain.
